On having goals

May 25, 2008

I keep hearing lately how important goal-setting is. Personally, I have decided that this is actually just a bunch of crap made up to sell self-help books. Then again, I could be very, very wrong.

Going with that thought, I have decided to set a goal. And it is this:

I want to race Indy cars.

What do y’all think? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I think I’d be a kick-ass race car driver. Of course, there’s always the possibility that I might kill myself.

If you don’t hear from me for a while, it’s because I’ve gone off to race car driving school. Wish me luck!

  1. Don’t get dizzy going around and around that track!

I find goal-setting helpful – I’m talking small goals here, like getting all the kids fed and dressed before noon! My bigger goals concerning my career seem to taunt me rather than encourage me, alas ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Do you have a Southern accent? That is mandatory for race car drivers, although they might make an exception for one who looks like you.

  3. Well, I guess as a racecar driver you’d have a tiny but more control than a rollercoaster rider. But, as you say, more likely to end up dead. Hmmm. Tough call.

(To Heart – that’s probably true for Nascar, but was Jackie Stewart an Indy driver? He had a Scottish accent.)

  4. I’m not so sure racing cars is what those self-help books have in mind, but, hey, go for it!
Best of luck! (Remember your helmet…)

  5. I’d like to fly with something like the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angels, and compete in Olympic equestrian events, but am a teensy bit constrained by circumstances that you can read about elsewhere. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Look Ricky Bobby, I just don’t see you and NASCAR getting along so perfectly yet. Maybe you should set more attainable goals right now like: Not eat gummy worms or not watch midget porn. Start off slow, work your way up to the Indy 500, SLOWLY.

  7. If Janet Guthrie could do it, so can you. I’ll follow your fortunes and what more appropriate thought for Memorial Day weekend could you have? Indy beckons.

  8. Lonie ~ You see how alike we are?! My biggest goal in life right now is not to just freaking lose it altogether! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I figured that more positive goals might help me out a bit, though, so I’m just going with it.

Heart ~ You know it’s funny that you mention it. I have been practicing. Of course, I’m hung up on y’all and “hush” (long story), but I’m hoping to be able to talk like a real Southern gentlewoman before my time is up. Do Southern gentlewomen race cars?

Citizen ~ You know, I hadn’t yet made the comparison (consciously, at least), but I think it’s a TREMENDOUS observation. I think I’ll start small and just go to the racecar driving school in Vegas or something like it. Wanna go?

Beth ~ Thanks for the reminder! (And the encouragement — you’re so great that way!)

Hazy ~ YAY!!!! I tried emailing you the other day and can’t remember your domaine, dammit. Would love to hear from you and will be haunting our haunts more often now that I know that it wasn’t obliterated off of the Net. That sucked. Hope you’re doing well and able to get enough time for *you*. xoxoxoxo

Say It ~ Dammit, girl. You are hilarious! Come race cars with me. You KNOW you want to!!!

    Ian ~ EXACTLY what prompted the thought! A picture of a woman in a blue racing suit popped up this weekend and I felt myself feeling a bit jealous. And then I thought — eff it — Dad taught me how to drive, just go drive!!! It might be fun. Or at the very least, it might make a good blog entry! lol! {{{{HUGS}}}}}

  9. My goal is to not set any goals. I do have a lot of wishes that I am working to make come true, though.

  10. Back when I was married my then husband had a Porsche.
    It was great.
I did a race-car driving class in that car.
    What a rush!

But there was that scary spinout… Maybe a good metaphor for my life at that time?

Hmm.. Forget Nascar. I will meet you at the go-kart track.

  11. I know you say this often, but we were definitely separated at birth. I have always wanted to be a race car driver. My passengers often think I am one now.

  12. Seventh Sister ~ I like that. A lot.

ACG ~ Scary spinouts are SCARY! I imagine I would have had my share of spinouts, too, if someone had given me access to a Porsche. I do so love driving fast! Go-kart tracks are great. Meet you there!

Reese ~ I wholeheartedly believe this about you and me. I have to pay attention to whether or not my poor passengers are white-knuckling it or not, though I must say that I have calmed down a bit in my old age. Just the other day, though, I dropped a “hold on!” to the kids as I was taking a corner too quickly. Some habits die hard. ๐Ÿ˜‰ xoxxoox

  13. if you really need to become expert in driving, your really need to enroll in a driving school ,”:
